In all his years in the Chicago Fire Department, Lieutenant Reed Solliday has never experienced anything like this recent outbreak of house fires—devastating, vicious, and in one case, homicidal.  He has another problem—his new partner, Detective Mia Mitchell.  She’s brash, bossy and taking the case in a direction he never imagined.  Mia’s instincts tell her the arsonist is making this personal.  And as the infernos become more deadly, one look at the victim’s tortured faces convinces her and Reed that they must work closer to catch a killer.  With each new blaze, the villain ups the ante, setting firetraps for the people Reed and Mia love.  The truth is almost too hot to handle:  This monster’s desire for death and destruction is unquenchable…and for Mia, he’s started a countdown to an early grave.

Um, okay, if I hadn’t been a rabid fan-girl of Karen Rose before now, this book would have converted me!  The fifth title in a loosely related series, you don’t need to read the other books first, but it does give you a better feel for the background characters.

Both Mia and Reed are gloriously flawed, REAL characters, and it’s patently obvious that Ms. Rose has done her homework when it comes to both her cops and her firefighters…they walk and talk like the folks I’ve known over the course of my life.  Add that authenticity to compelling characters and a faster-than-a-bullet storyline and you’ve got a book that’ll keep you up until 2 a.m.  And when you wake up the next day, you’ll tell your significant other all about it (even if they do give you the patented “yes dear” look).  Trust me on this one!
